How to Adjust the Cane Length

The most important aspect of a cane is its length—it should neither be too short nor too long.

An incorrect height adjustment can cause injuries or worsen the user’s condition.

But how do you determine the correct length?

The proper cane length allows the user to maintain an upright posture with a slightly bent elbow, ensuring that body weight is properly distributed on the cane while walking.

It is essential to remember that the measurement includes the handle or grip. This is crucial because not all canes are adjustable.

Steps to Determine the Correct Cane Length:

  1. Wear the shoes you normally use.
  2. Place the cane handle on the floor. If you don’t have a cane, measure the distance from the ground to your wrist using a measuring tape.
  3. Relax your arm naturally at your side (your elbow should be bent at about 20 to 30 degrees).
  4. The correct cane length is the distance from your wrist to the ground. It is advisable to have someone else take this measurement for accuracy.

If necessary, adjust the cane to match this measurement.

If the cane is adjustable, simply set it to the correct height.

Aluminum canes adjust by pressing a button and sliding the shaft to the desired length until the button locks into place.

Most canes have a standard length of 92-93 cm (36-37 inches).

Modifying a Cane’s Length

If your cane has a special ferrule (horn, acrylic, metal, etc.) and needs resizing, you may need to replace it with a similar ferrule or a rubber tip.

If you order a customized cane and choose cash on delivery, a 50% deposit via bank transfer will be required before shipping. Our sales department will contact you before dispatching the order.

How to Shorten a Cane Yourself

Wooden canes can be easily trimmed using a small saw.

Remove the rubber tip.

Cut the excess length, considering the ferrule’s height.

Double-check the length before cutting—it’s always better to cut a second time than to cut too short.

Reattach the rubber tip securely.

Custom-sized canes cannot be returned or exchanged.

If you need two canes, they should be slightly longer, as they will be used in front of the body for balance and support.
